21 February 2007-Comments:

Received this email from Cameron today (21 feb) before heading out. A satellite phone message follows:

"Hello, well to wrap up this expedition I'm headed out this AM (Wed the 21st) for a hut on the E shore of Iko Bay, just S of Scott Point on the main tracking chart you see below. Once I arrive at the hut I'll repack my gear for some excursions out from it to document and learn from the geography, sea ice, and other aspects of the environment there. A few days later I'll pack and head out for an excursion NE to Cooper Island, then SE down the island chain to Tangent Point, which is near the triangle you see on the chart below, just above 71 degrees 05 minutes North and just left of 155 degrees West. From Tangent Point the idea is to go SE into Dease Inlet, also on sea ice, to the islands in the south of the inlet, before heading 15-20 miles back NW to the hut. Back at the hut I'll continue to make my observations of the area, and then finally return to BASC around the third week of March.

It was 30 below here in Barrow last night, and it's normally about 10 degrees colder in the interior, so it could get pretty chilly! But I'm happy with my gear and preparations, and excited to go. The sled is heavy, with plenty of food and fuel aboard, and I'll move slowly to get to the hut in the first day or two. The whole trek should be about 90-100 miles, depending on a number of factors.

I'll keep posting updates to this page; a few pictures this AM, but there won't be any more after that until I get back.

Have a thrilling week!"

Satellite phone message from Cameron at 7:48pm PST:

"The weather was very good, so I decided to go completely to Iko Bay. I will stay here tomorrow to work on some equipment. For the moment I'm safe, I'm warm, and I'm at Iko Bay."

Note from Chuck: Cameron got dropped off a few miles outside of Barrow, where he began pulling his sled. He is staying at a small hunting cabin on Iko Bay belonging to Geoff Carroll.
