he first test of the pulkayak in open water was a complete success. The platform is stable, the pontoons completely preventing any rolling motion, particularly when I paddle, and, except for one leak (we've found the source and can fix it easily), the vessel is watertight. On Saturday, 18 November we crossed the Willamete River twice, paddling a total of about a mile, a full test with all Arctic gear and 150lb of ballast -- simulating my food and fuel. The test worked, and I'm confident and happy to take the sled to the Arctic.
