  • Behold the mighty 'PULKAYAK'! (Pulka=Icelandic for sled, kayak=Alaskan native for small boat). Well, OK, right now it's just a used kayak that I'll be converting into an amphibious sled, one that I can drag for hundreds of miles in the Arctic, but also paddle across open water between ice floes, if necessary. I'll be working on the modifications with Chuck Sullivan, who's an integral part of the expedition; he monitors my progress on the ice, coordinates my communications, prepares my rations, and helps with things like the pulkayak modifications. The pulkayak won't look much like this when we're done with it! Click the thumbnails below for a few other photos.
