Aside from my technical academic work, I write in two main fields: popular science and travel narrative.

I'm currently (March 2010) working on three books: The Fact of Evolution, (Promethus), will be my second book on evolution for a popular audience; this will be released in 2011. The second is The Frost Giants (Solas House, due out in late 2011 or early 2012) is a narrative of my expeditions to Iceland's Vatnajokull ice cap in the winters of 2000-2004. The third book, set to release in later 2011, is a semi-technical work for Springer/Praxis, Migration From Earth: Human Evolution and Space Colonization, which takes an anthropological perspective on the colonization of space; it is the result of an article I first wrote for the British Interplanetary Society's venerable Spaceflight magazine. My literary agent is Matt Wagner of Fresh Books. He's the best!

Books I've written, or books carrying my writing, are linked below, or you can order from my Amazon Author page.

I'm excited to say that for the third year in a row, I'll be contributing a chapter to Solas Houses' annual compendium of travel writing, The Best Travel Writing 2010. This year my chapter, A Viking Repast, OR, The Relentlessly Terrible History of Iceland in Three Courses, is an excerpt of my book-in-progress, The Frost Giants. Newly released McGraw-Hill anthropology text Annual Editions-Anthropology 2010/2011 carries a chapter I originally wrote for Cultural Survival magazine. I'm proud to have my writing alongside that of Richard Lee and Jared Diamond, among others.
I'm thrilled to say that my expedition narrative "Escape from Darien" -- which in 2008 was the Adventure Travel Gold Prize Winner in Solas House's Best Travel Writing contest, and was previously published in They Lived to Tell the Tale: True Stories of Adventure from the Legendary Explorers Club, will be featured as the opening chapter of The Best Travel Writing 2009. In May 2009 the new anthology Science Under Siege (Prometheus) will include a chapter written by me and Charles Sullivan, "Getting the Monkey Off Darwin's Back: Four Common Myths About Evolution." I'm proud to have my writing alongside Carl Sagan's final question-and-answer piece on the topic of science and skeptical inquiry, Ann Druyan's beautifully expressed 'Science, Religion, Wonder, and Awe,' and NASA scientist Stuart Jordan's excellent appraisal of the scientific evidence for global warming.
In 2009 Wiley will publish Wilderness Survival for Dummies which I'm currently wrapping up with John F. Haslett, mastermind and skipper of many wild adventures, including the 1995-1998 Manteno Expedition. The Wiley 'Dummies' series is phenomenally widely-distributed, and reaching so many people with material I've been thinking about and practicing for the last 20 years is thrilling! And I'm proud to write with John Haslett, who's working out the ocean survival chapters and much, much more...how to guide in a rescue helicopter, make a fire with sticks, and signal an aircraft with nothing more than an old CD. The book is also available electronically via Kindle.Ghost on the Ice. The 2008 Overall Silver Prize Winner in the Best Travel Writing contest! Published in The Best Travel Writing 2008.
Anthropology for Dummies, August 2008. What a ride, writing over 250 pages in less than eight months, cramming in everything I've learned in 24 years of university study! In this book I cover evolution, the Primate Order and humans' place in it, culture, gender roles, the colonization of the Pacific and everything else from genocide to Rosie the Riveter. You can find a sample chapter here, and see the table of contents and index here. The book is also doing well in its Kindle edition. Antropologie voor Dummies, June 2009. A Dutch translation of Anthropology for Dummies
The Top Ten Myths About Evolution, 2006. Written with Charles Sullivan. It is a great pleasure and privilege for me to say that Ann Druyan has written some favorable words about our book; with her late husband, Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan co-wrote the inspiring Cosmos television series and the book "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors", a grand tour of the scientific understanding of our species. About my book, Druyan writes -- "A modest proposal to reverse the national great leap backwards: I say we all familiarize ourselves with the compelling, crystalline logic of "The Top Ten Myths about Evolution."..." I falsi mitti dell' evoluzione, 2008. Written with Charles Sullivan. An Italian translation of The Top Ten Myths About Evolution
Escape from Darien, published in the 2007 Lyons Press anthology They Lived to Tell the Tale: True Stories of Adventure from the Legendary Explorers Club. The 2008 Adventure Travel Gold Prize Winner in the Best Travel Writing contest!
